Hello there, anon! And don’t worry about it, it’s not a silly question at all! Many people who play Pokémon casually don’t pay much attention to the stats, and that’s perfectly normal~. I’ll explain to you!
It’s actually pretty simple. If you have played any other RPG games before, you might know there are “warrior characters” and “mage characters”, right? Warrior characters does physical damage, while Mage characters stays in a distance doing Magic (or in this case, Special) damage.
The same happens to Pokémon. Pokémon who have a higher Attack value, does more damage with Physical Attacks, just like a Warrior. For example, Gyarados is a Physical Attacker, because he have a base Attack value of 125, while he only has a base Special Attack of 60. That means Gyarados will do WAY MORE damage by using Physical Attacks rather than Special attacks, no matter how strong the move itself is. Bite for example, a 60 Power Physical move, does just the SAME amount of damage as Hydro Pump, a 110 Power Special Move. Just because Gyarados have more normal Attack than Special Attack.
On the other side, there are Pokémon with higher Special Attack that are just like Mages, like Gengar for example. Gengar has a base Special Attack of 130, while only having a base normal Attack of 65. That means Special moves like Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, Thunderbolt and etc, will do way more damage than Physical moves like Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch, Brick Break, etc. Gengar only uses Special Attacks
As for Defense and Special Defense, it’s the same thing. Normal Defense absorbs damage from normal Attacks, while Special Defense absorbs damage from Special Attacks. A Pokémon with VERY HIGH Defense but LOW Special Defense, will take really low damage from Physical moves like Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch, Brick Break etc, but will take a lot of damage from Special Moves like Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, Thunderbolt etc.
You know if a move is a Physical Attack or a Special Attack by looking at these two symbols that shows up when you look at a move’s description:
TL;DR: The higher the normal Attack value, the more damage you do with Physical Moves. The higher the Special Attack value, the more damage you do with Special Moves.
The higher the Defense value, the more you endure Physical Moves. The higher the Special Defense value, the more you endure Special Moves.
Im surprised about this fact actually.. Didnt knw it’ll play a big part.
